I had many good memories of these stories and the super-heroic Captain Comet from when I was a boy. I thought that earlier story with art by Murphy Anderson looked very old-fashioned and I loved the Rich Buckler d I bought this in hardcover because I lost my original comic book copies decades ago. Back in the 1970's, when these stories first came out, I had only seen one Captain Comet story that had been reprinted earlier in the decade. Unfortunately, the stories don't hold up well on re-reading. I bought this in hardcover because I lost my original comic book copies decades ago.

Still, I'm looking forward to finishing up the series in the next volume. It never got to a point I'd call it bad, but it definitely could use some tightening up in regards to plot. If you don't mind some 70s style haphazard storytelling you'll probably like this. And really, it's pretty imprssive that a series starring a bunch of villains lasted 15 issues in the mid-70s, not counting the other specials and titles that crossed over with this series. If the stories had been a little more cohesive there was real potential here. It's really all over the place and sometimes you feel like you missed an issue even though you haven't. I would have gone five stars for this but it lacks direction. The art's good for the most part as well. I'm not sure if that was tongue in cheek or it was a more serious dig at Stan. I still don't quite get Funky Flashman, the con-man character based on Stan Lee. Not sure how Captain Comet ended up being the main hero of the series since that's a very odd choice, but it works.

The mix was unusual, and the guest stars as well. It's a very unusual series featuring characters we rarely (ever?) got to see in starring roles. I'm not sure if that was tongue in cheek o This is a very eclectic series most people will probably either really like or not like at all. This is a very eclectic series most people will probably either really like or not like at all. The attempt to turn Captain Comet into their regular nemesis was interesting and he had potential as a character, but his story tended to take over and we were reading to see the bad guys in action. The problem was, the writers couldn't allow the bad guys to win, so after awhile the SSoSV look like a bunch of chumps. The ensemble feel to the Society was also a lot of fun. Love the stories being from the bad guys point of view and how some stories would have them forced to do the right thing, while others would have them up to something. This turned out not to be a bad thing, but instead kept the series interesting and unpredictable. Started with an interesting idea, but kept switching writers, so the focus would change every three issues, and sometimes the cast. The ensemble feel to the Society was also a One of the all time great guilty pleasure comics of all time.
